Questions About ROSE Revision Surgery

What is ROSE Revision Surgery?

The ROSE (Restorative Obseity Surgery Endolumenal) Procedure is an effective revision bariatric surgery for individuals who have gained back the pounds they lost through a previous gastric bypass surgery. Over time, the smaller stomach pouch that was created through bariatric surgery can begin to stretch again, increasing your stomach capacity and allowing for increased weight gain if patients are not careful.

Thankfully, patients with a stretched stomach opening (stoma) can shrink it again without undergoing a second invasive bariatric surgery. ROSE revision surgery is an incision-free, minimally invasive procedure designed to restore your stomach to the size it was after your initial surgery, giving you a second chance at weight loss and a new lease on life.

How does the ROSE Procedure work?

Similar to the StomaphyX procedure, Dr. Dahiya will put you under general anesthesia and place an endoscopic device down your esophagus and into your stomach. Guided by the endoscope’s visualization, he will then use specialized instruments to create folds around your stomach opening to reduce its diameter. The folds are then sutured together, effectively shrinking your stomach.

Am I a candidate for ROSE Revision Surgery?

If you previously underwent a successful bariatric surgery but have since regained the pounds you lost, you may be a candidate for a ROSE procedure. Some more specific requirements include:

  • Your original weight loss surgery was performed at least 2 years ago
  • You lost 50% of your excess weight
  • You have gained at least 15% of it back

The best way to determine if you are a candidate for the ROSE Procedure is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Dahiya.

What is recovery like after the ROSE Procedure?

Since the ROSE Procedure does not require incisions, you can return to work and your normal life activities the day after procedure. Many patients are able to return home the same day of their ROSE Procedure, while others may need to stay overnight. For the first four to six weeks after your procedure, you will need to return to your original bariatric surgery diet in order to start losing weight again and allow the sutures in your stomach to heal. Depending on how motivated you are, you can lose up to 30% of the excess weight you have regained.
