Questions about StomophyX™

Los Angeles, Irvine, and Riverside, California

How does StomaphyX™ work?

StomaphyX™ is a non-invasive, incisionless procedure that involves a small endoscopic device. This device is guided into your stomach pouch through your mouth while you are under general anesthesia. The endoscope within the StomaphyX allows Dr. Dahiya to directly visualize the inside of your stomach. Once the StomaphyX device is inside your stomach pouch, it uses suction to pull tissue from your stomach wall inside of the device, where it is then folded and fastened into place. This process is repeated until your stomach pouch has reached the appropriate smaller size.

Can StomaphyX™ be used on me instead of gastric bypass surgery?

No. StomaphyX is only used to tighten stomach pouches on patients who have already undergone gastric bypass surgery.

 Am I a candidate for StomaphyX™?

Unlike gastric bypass surgery, there is no minimum weight requirement for undergoing a StomaphyX procedure. If you have regained weight after successfully undergoing weight loss surgery, you may be a candidate for StomaphyX. However, it is important to understand that just like gastric bypass surgery, you must be committed to a strict diet and regular follow-up with Dr. Dahiya in order to increase your odds of shedding the pounds you regained.

How will I feel after a StomaphyX™ procedure?

The most common side effects that patients report after undergoing StomaphyX include a sore through and a tangible “tightness” in their stomach area. These effects usually only last for a few days following the procedure. Some patients may need to take a mild pain reliever like Tylenol for one to three days after the procedure, but very few patients will need stronger pain relievers.

When can I return to work after StomaphyX™?

Most patients can return to their normal life and work activities the day after their StomaphyX procedure. However, Dr. Dahiya advises against heavy lifting for a least a month afterward. Dr. Dahiya will discuss your individual activities with you beforehand to ensure your safety.

What will my diet be like after StomaphyX™?

Your post-StomaphyX diet plan will be similar to the eating plan you had after your gastric bypass surgery. You’ll start with high protein liquids and slowly easy into more solid food as time goes on. Dr. Dahiya and his team will discuss your diet plan with you in detail and perform regular follow-up to ensure you are on track.
